Match email reply to the ticket using References option is enabled dy default.

The References field contains the Message-IDs of all the replies in the thread. If somebody replies to an old email, it gets added to the original ticket. If the option is disabled, the email reply is matched only by the ticket ID in the email subject. In that case, if the subject is changed, the reply creates a new ticket.
